The WWF Palm Oil Buyers Scorecard assesses the progress of companies on the commitments and actions necessary to be a responsible user of palm oil. Companies were asked to respond to a questionnaire in the second half of 2019. We used their responses and the latest RSPO supply chain data for 2018 Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO) purchases to calculate their scores.

L'Oréal has a unique international portfolio of 36 diverse and complementary brands. The Group "Zero deforestation policy " applies indifferently to any brand and any product anywhere in the world. L’Oréal uses low volumes of palm oil, less than 380 tons in 2018, mainly for its emollience properties. The specificity of the cosmetics industry is to use palm and palm kernel oil based derivatives. From these two oils, after several steps of chemical transformation, we obtain: glycerin, fatty acids and fatty alcohols or esters. These are the transformed raw materials purchased by L’Oréal which are then used in the formulation of shampoos, conditioners, shower gels, or skin care products for their moisturizing properties (glycerin), foaming, cleaning (Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Coco-Betaine), stabilizing, emollient (isopropyl palmitate), pearlizer (glycol distearate), that finally enter in different products categories. In 2018, L’Oréal used approximately 71,000 tons of palm oil and palm kernel oil equivalent through derivatives.
